Infant Welcome

Colegio-Privado-Internacional-Britanico-Ingles-Las_Palmas-Maspalomas-English-School-welcomeDear Parents: I hope you all enjoyed a lovely summer break and as Headteacher I would like to welcome you back to the new school year 2019-2020. I would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to all our new families and hope that you will enjoy becoming part of our happy school community.

Our little Pre-Nursery and Nursery children seem to be settling in very nicely already on the whole, although it does often take this full first month to adapt fully to their new school! We have also welcomed several new staff members into school this year, which I'm sure many of you will have met on the playground in the mornings and afternoons: Miss Paula (Nursery Coordinator and Nursery A Teacher) Miss Kathryn (Year 1 A Teacher) Miss Allison (Teaching Assistant), and Miss Andrea who is our PE monitor.

We would like to say a big thank you and goodbye to Miss Maria Thornhill, who has decided to start her retirement and so has not returned after the holiday. Miss Maria worked at Canterbury for 33 years, teaching hundreds of children during her time here, and will be greatly missed by us all. I'm sure you all join the Canterbury staff in wishing Miss Maria all the very best for her retirement.

Over the first few weeks of term the teaching staff will be holding class meetings for parents to share information about the learning, organization and expectations for this year and ways in which you can support your child's learning at home. This is also a time for you to ask any questions that you may have in preparation for the year ahead. Pre-Nursery and Nursery have already held their meetings but the rest of the meetings are:
Year 1: Monday 23rd September 15:40
Reception: Thursday 26th September 15:40

In this letter we would like to remind and update you about a few matters related to school life.

All key information about the school and our year group blogs can be found on our school website. School newsletters are published on the website not sent home with the children. Please look at the website frequently so to keep up to date.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask either myself or the staff and we will try our best to help you. We also always endeavor to reply as quickly as possible to emails.

 Any questions you have in relation to your child's education be it academic, social or emotional should initially be directed to their class teacher. If they are unable to resolve the issue it will be passed to Miss Pam.

 Matters related to school organisation, curriculum, etc... should be directed to Miss Pam.
 All administrative questions are dealt with by the secretary whose hours are:
8:00–14:00 and 14:30–15:45 ideally by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

 Questions related to the school bus service are dealt with directly by Amanda Bus whose telephone number is 928 22 48 38.

To continue I would like to update you about the following organizational arrangements with regards to keeping everyone safe and thank you in advance for abiding by these:

• If your child has any specific medical needs or allergies and /or needs medication in school (EpiPen, inhaler...) please make sure that you have spoken to the teacher and given us this information in writing, so that we can meet your child's needs appropriately. The authorization form (available from the office) to permit us to give medication during the school day must be filled in and the medication must be handed in to the office in its original packaging. For the safety of all the children, medication is not allowed to be left in a child's bag.

• As we have several children in school with severe nut allergies, we would like the school to be a nut-free zone. Please do not send nuts of any description (peanuts, almonds, pistachos....) or food containing nuts with your child for their snacks. Our suggested 'Healthy Snack Menu' can be found on our website.

• The main entrance gate will be opened at 8.00 am. If any child needs to come to school before that time we offer you our Early Bird Club. This club will start at 7.15 am. Please note that this service will incur an extra charge of 21 € each month.

• Children begin class at 8.30 am PLEASE BE ON TIME! It is vital for children to be in school for the opening session as this is where much learning takes place.

• In order to ensure the safety of all children our Nursery, Reception and Year 1 children will say goodbye to their parents at the gate. There are staff on duty in the playground from 08:00 until school starts at 8:30.

• We would like to ask all parents to please avoid standing around in the gate and entrance areas, both in the morning and in the afternoon, as this blocks them and means that the entry and exit of the children is more difficult to supervise and thus less secure.

• Parking is difficult in the local area so there is also a member of staff on the pavement to take children from the cars into school. If parents leave the drop off area quickly, the traffic in the road by the school will flow better and this will enable every parent to drop off their child right by the school gate.

• The parking bay ("vado") outside the school is only for the school buses, to drop your child off quickly or for an emergency vehicle. The school buses have priority and it is imperative that the school buses can park here right by the kerb to ensure the safety of the children who travel in them. On many occasions the buses have been unable to use the parking bay because parents have their cars parked in it, meaning that the bus children have to walk into the street to reach the bus. We ask parents who collect children at 14:45-15:00 to not park in the parking bay.

• The school day finishes at 15:30. The gate will be opened at 15.15 pm for parents of Pre-Nursery and Nursery children to collect their children. Parents of children in Reception and Year 1 may collect their children when they come down to the playground at 15:30.

Parents are welcome to talk to their child's teacher at the end of the day or if you want an appointment call or send an email to the office.
Parents are responsible for their own children's safety and behavior once they have been handed over at the end of the day.

• For the safety of all the children we request that all families to please leave school promptly when you have collected your child. Children should not be running around or playing in the school grounds, including the grass/garden areas, at the end of the school day, in order to avoid possible accidents. Thank you!

• There will be staff on gate duty until 16.00, by which time all children need to have been collected.

• To ensure your child's safety we are unable to hand over any child to another parent/carer unless we are able to identify that person and have clear written permission prior to the end of the day. If your child is being collected by a different person, parents must send this in writing to the class teacher and email to the school office, with a copy of their DNI.

• If you would like your child to celebrate his/her birthday at school and you decide to send a cake please remember to send a candle, plates and spoons too. Please tell the class teacher in advance of when you would like your child to celebrate their birthday, so they can arrange their timetable accordingly.

Due to health and hygiene laws, we can't accept home-made products: biscuits, cakes, cookies, etc. Any products you send in should be commercially packaged.

• No trolley bags (with wheels) are permitted in the Infant school. They are dangerous, the children are too small to handle them bearing in mind how many steps and stairs there are within the school.

• Children in Reception do not have a daily contact book as they did in Nursery. If you would like to know how well your child is eating in the dining room, please ask their class teacher.

• Finally to remind all parents you must let us know in writing if your child is absent for any reason. This can be by email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or a signed note written to the teacher when the child comes back to school.

Kind regards,

Pam Ainsworth

Infant Department Headteacher
