Infant Newsletter

Dear Parents: firstly a very warm welcome back after the Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year to you all!

Thank you all for your support during the first term as we all moved to living under the new restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As we are now in Level 3 for Covid-19 on the island, we are monitoring our Covid-19 prevention routines in school as we now need to all take a greater responsibility and awareness of the part we can all play in lowering the contagion rates. We would like to remind parents, when picking up your child at the end of the day please leave the school premises straight away, moving right away from the area. Please do not then congregate outside the school together as this makes it difficult for other families with children in different classes to pass safely as the pavements by the school are narrow. Children from different class bubbles can often be seen mixing together in groups outside the school gates whilst parents chat together and this negates all the efforts we have gone to to keep the classes separated in their bubbles all day long in school.

We would recommend all pupils who are arriving before the recommended entry time for their year group come to school wearing a face mask, as they sit, spread out in class bubbles, in the dining room until 8:15.

Recommended entry times:
Year 1: 8:15 -8:30 (Year 1 start their lessons at 8:30, so please don't be late!)
Reception: 8:30-8:45
Nursery: 8:45-9:00

If for some reason your son/daughter is going to be absent from school, please communicate this to us by e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) first thing in the morning of the first day they are absent. Please also let us know if the child or anyone in the immediate family is being tested for Covid. The school secretary will call anyone who has not informed us about an absence.
Remember all absences, even for one day, need to be justified in writing by parents.

If you wish to enrol any younger brothers and sisters to start at Canterbury School in September 2021 please contact the office for the matriculation papers, if you have not already done so.

Please remember to look at the Frog platform and your child's class Frog site frequently. This is where we post any updates or information and you can read about what the class has been learning each week. In the gallery section the teachers post photos each week of some of the learning activities that have taken place.
Remember, if your child needs to isolate or is absent from school, you can follow the learning going on in the classroom by using the "Home Learning" tab on the class site. Here the teachers post their learning sites that contain the lessons being covered that week. There are links to phonics videos and activities you can also use to support your child's learning at home, should you wish to, even if they are not absent.

We are continuing to gradually improve and extend our use of Frog across the school. There is now a Google translate button on the home page in "Quick Links", so when you log on to Frog, if you select Spanish in the drop-down box, everything you go to on Frog will be translated into this language.

We are also beginning to roll out E-portfolios for each child, starting with Pre-Nursery and Nursery. On the home page you will see the link to this in "Quick Links", below the translate button. If you click this link it will take you to your child's E-portfolio, where we will be their "Learning Journal" which documents their progress at school through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). You can also upload photos or documents to show your child's achievements at home. As well, the E-portfolio will contain the daily diary, showing what your child has eaten during lunch, and shortly we will be using this rather than the current paper copy. The diary page also has a box where you can send a message to the teacher which will go directly to their email.

Any feedback from parents about Frog, or suggestions about how Frog could be more useful or informative to you, would be greatly appreciated.

This year each class will make a recording of their class assembly and this will be posted on the Frog site of all the Infant classes, so that the other children and their parents can enjoy watching it. Our assemblies are based on the school values, Golden Rules or Learning Muscles.

CARNIVAL / CHINESE NEW YEAR Friday 12th February
Although there is not going to be a Carnival this year, we will be celebrating the end of the first half term on Friday 12th February by having a Carnival /Chinese New Year day, as Chinese New Year falls on this day. The children will be doing lots of fun activities related to these themes and the school kitchen will be making a special Chinese themed lunch on this day. If children wish to come to school wearing a carnival costume or some red clothes they are welcome to do so.

Please remember that on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th February 2021 the school will be closed for our mid-term holiday.

This term the reports will be sent home in sealed envelopes with the children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 classes on the last day of term, 26/3/20 and they will also be emailed to parents on this day. We do not give out individual parent appointments in the second term, however as always, parents who wish to speak to the teacher about their child may ask for an appointment at any time.

The last day of Term 2 is Friday 26th March 2021 and children may come to school wearing street clothes. The 3rd Term will begin on Monday 12th April 2021.

Yours sincerely,

Pam Ainsworth,
Infant Department Headteacher
