CAIE Announcement 09/04

Dear parents: with regard to IGCSE, AS and A Level examinations for May/June 2020, Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) has informed us of the following points.

1. All candidates entered in IGCSE, AS or AL subjects will be awarded an official grade and an official results certificate exactly as they would have them had they sat exams in normal circumstances. These grades and results certificate will be as valid for university access as if they had been awarded in normal conditions.

2. Regarding how CAIE will grade candidates, the types of evidence that might be available could include but will not be limited to:

2.1. Mock exams
2.2. Coursework (complete or incomplete)
2.3. Assignments
2.4. AS Level results for 'staged-route' A Level candidates
2.5. Grades in previous sittings for candidates re-taking exams

CAIE may take into account other components yet to be determined. We are awaiting further clarification.

3. Entry fees. Cambridge will not refund the entry fees but will offer a choice between:

3.1. Choice 1: Point 1 above, that is, to be awarded and official grade and an official results certificate exactly as candidates would have had should have they sat exams. Since candidates would be graded as if they had taken exams, CAIE considers refunds are not pertinent.

3.2. Choice 2: Withdraw one or more entries from May/June 2020 and enter for October/November 2020 (or a later session).

Cambridge would allow this and new entries would be made for October/November. Choosing option 2 means the candidate WOULD NOT be graded nor would be awarded results certificates for May/June 2020. Choice 2 does not include entries for new subjects not entered last February,
only moving already entered subjects to October/November (or a later session).

From school we advise choosing OPTION 1. Option 2 would put at risk meeting requirements regarding university access for Y13 students, validation of Spanish E.S.O. and Bachillerato for Y11, Y12, or Y13 students, and promotion criteria for Y11 and Y12 students.
Also, please take into account that October/November exam dates would coincide with the normal running of lessons during next academic year during September, October, and November. That is to say, a Y11 student sitting 1 or more IGCSEs in October/November would not be attending IGCSE lessons during September, October and November. Likewise, Y12 students sitting AS exams in September, October, November, would not be attending AS lessons during those 3 months.
