Carnaval Secundaria

Carnival 2019: The Guide to a Perfect Disaster

Everything can be overcome with patience and determination. Carnival Day seems to be all fun and games, and it is. However, the organisation behind an event of such magnitude can be even more challenging than finding a costume for it. This experience has allowed Year 12 to show off their strengths as well as acknowledge their weaknesses.

Initially, we expected time management to be the easiest task since we had had a month to get it all together. Nevertheless, meeting deadlines became one of the toughest issues, alongside the distribution of roles related to the mid morning activities. At the beginning, everyone wanted to take part in a certain activity or task. We were unable to see past our personal desires and make the event our priority. Thankfully, most of us realized that in order for this project to succeed, sacrifices would have to be made.

Additionally, communication between the management team and the year-group was not fluid, especially over the first few weeks. Consequently, conflicts emerged and solutions were not easily found. Nonetheless, with the help of our mentor, Mr. O'Kane, and a few Year 12 meetings, we were able to improve our communication and team working skills.

Delegation was another key skill so as to be able to cope with the workload and concentrate on those areas that required more attention. We learnt that trust was pivotal to motivating our peers. Despite encountering some disappointments, we have come to understand in a highly practical environment that learning is more often than not a process of trial and error.

At times, we found ourselves on the verge of losing Carnival permanently. This could partly have been down to taking the risk of breaking with tradition, innovating and creating new activities instead of just repeating what had been done in previous years' events. Our ability as managers was questioned on numerous occasions due to the fact that rather than order, chaos and confusion were often the results of our work; we now understand that 'bossing' and 'leading' are terms that must not be confused. A lesson we must not forget in the future. Unexpected last minute problems were encountered right up to the very morning of Carnival Day which tested our capacity to respond quickly to unforeseen difficulties and manage stress. A clear example of this and the one which was the hardest to deal with was when one of us forgot the tickets for the best participants of each year group on the day of the event. We had to adjust the number of tickets per activity in order to suit the amount we had and inform the rest of the year 12 students in a very small window of time, but we were able to fix the issue and carry on with the day.

Nevertheless, the day itself surpassed all our expectations, which in itself is a valuable lesson; nothing is ever as tragic, or indeed as marvellous it may seem. Judgement is more often than not subjective, rather than objective.

Overall, this venture helped us develop countless skills that will be very handy in the future. Moreover, we have built new and deeper relationships with our colleagues. It has been a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end, but we feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to take on such a challenge.
